Unfortunately Thunderbird does not support the option to edit already saved password which is the reason why you should first remove the already saved password and then add the new password you would like to use. In this tutorial we are going to cover this entire process for you and at the end you will be able to change the saved password for any of your email accounts. This tutorial assumes that you have already configured email account in thunderbird and that you have already saved a password for that email account. Let’s begin by accessing the “ Saved Passwords” configuration window. It is available under the Tools menu > Options. And in the newly opened window you will need to choose Security > Passwords > Saved Passwords. On April 27, Thunderbird was accessed for the same account on Mac Sierra and the same method of updating the password was attempted but the password that was set the day before was forgotten. Reset the password at gmail using a browser and then was able to apply that new password in Thunderbird on the Mac. The “ Saved Passwords” button will bring a window named the same as the button where you will find all of the saved passwords for your email accounts. Please remove them all by clicking on the “ Remove All” button. Now you will need to fully restart Thunderbird so the password cache the mail client use can be cleaned. When you newly start Thunderbird you will be prompted to enter your password for your email account. And once you do so your email account will be using the new password. You have successfully changed the password for your email account. I just turned two step OFF, but it still failed on Thunderbird. The Google log-in fails. In such case, you need to enable 'Access for less secure apps,' By default, the above setting is disabled. Change your settings to allow less secure apps to access your account. We don't recommend this option because it might make it easier for someone to break into your account. If you want to allow access anyway, follow these steps: Go to the 'Less secure apps' section in My Account. Next to 'Access for less secure apps,' select Turn on. Source: It is NOT recommended anyway but if you do not enable two-steps authentication, you need to change the above setting. If you set a secure password and don't reuse it elsewhere and don't get easily phished, then you can enable 'Access for less secure apps.' If you're not computer literate, and are easily fooled by scams, it's best to keep that disabled and not use Thunderbird. If you really need to change your password, you must use the web interface to set a new password. The Thunderbird interface is only for saving the password you set so that you don't have to keep entering it in Thunderbird. If you must change your Gmail password, you need to open a Web Browser (Safari, Chrome or Firefox) and change it there. You can't change it in Thunderbird. To reset the saved Thunderbird password, you may have to delete the previous one first. Select Thunderbird --> Preferences (Or press Command Comma ) When the Dialog box opens Select Security. Select Passwords Press the Saved Passwords. Find your Gmail password entry and delete the old saved password. Restart Thunderbird (Make sure you Quit with Command q before starting it) Thunderbird should now prompt you to enter a new password.
